This is an anime based on the manga series apart from the last two episodes which follow an original storyline. It’s intense and has a dark history and an organization that is mysterious. There is a story and truth beyond the main characters. From drama to bloody battles Claymore turns out to be an amazing work of art. It’s based on a claymore, that is, a half-human, half-yoma creature known as Clare and her comrades.
Some of the main characters include:
Clare and her comrades try to survive in a world that is filled with yoma or demons that can take the shape and look of a human being. Clare’s parents were killed when she was little by a yoma disguised as her brother. Teresa, a claymore, destroys a yoma pack that Clare was travelling with and consequently frees her. They travel together until Teresa is killed by a Priscilla and Clare vows to be warrior, look for Priscilla and kill her.
She adopted Clare and is known to defeat opponents using more yoki or demon energy than she has due to her ability to feel the yoki in her challengers. However she is killed by Priscilla leaving Clare traumatized.
She is a claymore who is powerful and able to fight without using her yoki. That enables her to be able to hide from her opponents. She leads a group of claymores sent to kill Teresa and in the process ends up releasing her yoki and changes into a one-horned, winged creature. At a particular point she meets Rigaldo and Isley and defeats them, reverting into a human and losing her memory in the process. After swearing allegiance to Priscilla Isley promises to take her south. Because of the Teresa scent Raki carries due to his closeness to Clare, Priscilla is attached to him. Priscilla eventually regains her memory and gets into a fight with Clare and is defeated. Isley takes her away after she goes back to her childlike state but not before being saved by Raki.
She is nicknamed a Phantom due to her leaving of afterimages which can be confusing to her opponents. Investigating the organization after the death of her friend Hilda she becomes disillusioned with its deception and corruption. She eventually quits.
She can elongate her hands and attack or bind her opponents. She uses the Jean’s Drill Sword style too. She is one of the members of the Paburo hunt and she likes to drink and eat. She is aggressive and hot tempered and looks down upon Clare for her low ranking. She is also partially awakened, that is, already turning into a yoma.
This is a northern campaign survivor who has an ability to regenerate. She is close to Helen and develops a rapport with Clare and Miria after the Paburo Hunt. As a young girl her family was killed by a yoma and she wishes to avenge them. However, due to her survival instinct she is the type to go into defense mode and thinks herself as a coward.
After his family is killed by a yoma, he is rescued by Clare when she is sent to his village to kill it. He is sensitive and dislikes the treatment of the claymores, the fighting and the killing.
In the beginning, after a young boy’s whole family is killed in the hands of a yoma, a claymore is sent to the village to kill it. The claymore happens to be Clare. The young boy whose family was killed is called Raki and develops a rapport with Clare. One evening, Clare follows Raki to his uncle’s house after detecting a yoma scent on him and ends up saving his life. The yoma had actually taken the form of his brother when it killed their parents. Consequently, the villagers kick Raki out of the village and he wonders off into the desert. He is then rescued from the desert by another claymore, an act which comes as a surprise to many. Thinking this claymore was Clare, Raki goes after her and ends up being used by a yoma to entrap Clare. Clare saves him and he ends up being her cook.
A man from the organization brings Clare a black card together with a change of clothes. The card is sent when a claymore realizes she is turning into a yoma and is sent to the person the claymore regards as close. Clare is required to kill her friend Elena. She leaves Raki in a hotel but Raki due to the growing attachment, follows Clare as she ends Elena’s life. Raki pleads with Clare not to do it but in vain. Apparently it’s the only way out.
At a particular point Clare is forced to use drugs to hide her characteristics in a city in which claymores are not allowed. This makes it difficult for her to find the yoma. To meet the client of her organization she infiltrates the church posing as a human. She is confronted by two knights accusing her of being a claymore but Raki defends her. Clare discourages Raki from thinking that she is kind because it would just end in disappointment. She finally finds the yoma and kills it protecting the two knights who had interfered.
Eventually, there is a battle between Clare and another claymore known as Priscilla in which Clare is dominated. Priscilla believes that Clare is Teresa. A group of friends arrives and makes an attempt to help her but Priscilla is too strong and almost kills all of them.
Flashbacks of Teresa who was killed by Priscilla motivate her to ‘awaken’ or turn into a yoma and defeat her but before she finishes her off, Raki interferes and ends up being attacked too. Jean who is also a claymore ends up being killed instead leaving Clare heavy laden with gilt and grief. Priscilla is retrieved and after leaving the Claymore organization, Clare continues travelling with Raki.
